Mrs. Newbold died Friday, June 12, 1998, as a result of contracting hantavirus. She was 38.
Mrs. Newbold was born April 11, 1960, in Waco, Texas, and had lived in Durango since 1970. She graduated from Durango High School in 1978 and from Fort Lewis College in 1982 with a bachelors degree in business and secondary teaching certification.
Mrs. Newbold was a teacher until becoming a mother, and she recently began substituting in School District 9-R. She was a frequent volunteer for many community organizations and within the 9-R school system.
Survivors include her husband of 17 years, Keith Newbold; children, Darin, Kristi and Devin Newbold; parents, Marvin and Donna Giersch of Durango; brothers, Chris Giersch of Russell, Kan., and Curtis Giersch of Durango; sister, Amy Lantz of Durango; and grandparents, G.L. Giersch of Salina, Kan., and Isabelle Krannawitter of Hoxie, Kan.
